AirTag: How to change the battery

AirTags are practical little helpers in everyday life. If we attach them to our key ring or handbag, the chance of losing these important items drops considerably. The AirTags make it possible to track them constantly – provided their battery is full. Few things are more annoying than an AirTag that suddenly no longer has enough power to do its job. Imagine, for instance, that you’ve misplaced your key, reach for your iPhone to locate it, only to find that there’s no signal – that meant high costs and a lot of hassle. Fortunately, the AirTag battery can be changed. How exactly this works and how you can keep an eye on the battery level, we tell you below!

AirTag – change battery or recharge?

Those who have been using Apple devices for a long time will probably wonder about changing a battery at first. With most Apple devices, this is precisely a Herculean task that requires considerable technical know-how as well as special tools. Not so with the AirTag. This was developed by Apple as a device with a replaceable supermarket battery. This also means that there is no possibility to change an AirTag. If the battery charge is nearing the end, the battery simply has to be replaced – as with conventional everyday devices such as remote controls, flashlights or calculators.

Short instructions: Seven steps

Changing the battery in the AirTag is correspondingly simple. There are just seven steps involved:

  1. Turn the AirTag so that the silver side is on top
  2. Now press on the stainless steel area.
  3. Turn it then counterclockwise until it cannot be turned any further.
  4. Take it out of the AirTag along with the battery.
  5. Insert a new battery so that the positive terminal is on top.
  6. Put the cover back on. Make sure that its three tabs are in the corresponding slots of the AirTag housing.
  7. Turn the stainless steel cover clockwise until it stops turning.

The stainless steel part on the back of the AirTags serves as a battery cover and can be easily removed.

Important: Only CR2032 lithium button cells with 3 volts can be inserted into an AirTag. They should not have a bitter coating (designed to keep small children from putting the batteries in their mouths). Batteries are available in most supermarkets and drugstores. Note that you should keep the batteries and battery cover away from small children and pets, as there is a risk of choking if swallowed!

When do you need to replace the AirTag battery?

Ideally, you should only replace the AirTag battery when necessary – otherwise you will spend more money on batteries than necessary. You can easily check the battery charge in the “Where is?” app on your iPhone:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Open the “Objects” tab.
  3. Tap on the AirTag whose charge you want to check.
  4. If the battery charge is very low, “Battery almost empty” will be displayed in the information overview.

In addition, Apple will notify you via push-up notification if the battery charge of an AirTag is very low.

By the way, AirTags can not be used with Android devices. Here it is only possible to trace foreign AirTags in the sense of a stalking protection and thus protect yourself.
