Sony’s PlayStation 5 can be equipped with all sorts of gadgets. One of them is a so-called media remote, which does not offer any new functions, but is supposed to increase the comfort when using certain PS features. What exactly the PS5 remote has to offer and whether the purchase is worth it, you can find out in the following lines.
PS5 remote for multimedia use
The remote isn’t needed for gaming. In this area, it also doesn’t represent any help or relief. Rather, it is designed for the use of other media via the PlayStation 5. With the development of the remote control, Sony makes it clear that the new console is no longer intended as a pure gaming product. Rather, it is supposed to be a multimedia device that combines gaming and streaming. The remote control has been designed for the latter aspect.
Quick access to streaming services
Among other things, the remote control of the PS5 is equipped with four quick access buttons. The button assignments are clear: the logos of the respective streaming services are emblazoned on them. Netflix, Disney+, Spotify and YouTube have secured such a spot. If you want to use these services on your PS5, you only have to press one button with the remote. Compared to searching in the somewhat confusing menu of the console, this is a time-saving relief.
Above the streaming buttons are three additional controls that are explicitly intended for these applications. They can be used to switch between content, and playback can also be started and stopped.
Beyond that, the PS5 remote is equipped with all the buttons that a conventional TV remote can offer. Interestingly, it also has a button that can be used to switch between PlayStation and the TV program. The TV’s volume and power settings can also be adjusted via the PS5 remote, as long as it’s a compatible TV.
Is it worth buying the remote control?
All of this information, however, does not answer the burning question of whether the media remote is worth buying. This supposedly easy question, when looked at more closely, is actually quite complex: a clear yes or no is by no means sufficient as an answer. Whether the PS5 remote is a sensible purchase for you depends not only on your PS5 usage, but also on the type of TV you use it with.
If you mainly use your PS5 for games, you can safely do without the remote. However, if you also see your console as a kind of media center, you should think more carefully about the possible purchase. The following considerations are especially helpful.
PS5 with HDMI CEC TV
If your PS5 is directly connected to a TV that supports HDMI-CEC, you should refrain from buying the Sony remote. In fact, in this case, there is a possibility to connect your TV remote to the PlayStation. To do this, you just need to go through the following steps:
- Open the PS5 settings.
- Select the “System” item.
- Select “HDMI”.
- Activate the item “Enable HDMI device connection”.
In addition, you need to enable the HDMI CEC function in the settings of your TV. That’s all it takes to use your TV remote for the PlayStation 5 – at no extra cost.
PS5 without HDMI-CEC TV
If your TV is not HDMI-CEC capable or if you use your PS5 without a TV, it is much more worthwhile to shell out around 30 euros for the PS5 remote. In this case, it is the only option for easier multimedia control.
