iPhone no longer turns on – this could be the problem

The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market. It is known for its special design and ease of use. However, problems can also occur with this smartphone. Your iPhone no longer turns on? You don’t know what could be the reason? We’ll show you the possible causes behind your problem – and how to proceed to get your phone up and running again.

iPhone no longer turns on – this is how you force the restart

If an iPhone won’t turn on anymore, the first step to solve the problem should be to force a restart. Often, there is no serious problem behind the malfunction. In this case, a forced restart is enough to restore the full functionality of the device. How you should proceed to force restart depends on the iPhone you own.

On older models, you need to press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen. On the iPhone 7, as well as the iPhone 7 Plus, you’ll need to hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time until the logo appears. On all newer models, you have to press the volume down button first and release it immediately. Then press the volume down key and release it again immediately. Finally, press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo. Now the iPhone should turn on without any problems.

Certain key combinations can be used to force an iPhone restart

The forced restart does not work in every case. If your phone does not respond at all, you should try the options described below. If the Apple logo appears, but the startup process is not completed, it makes sense to put the device into maintenance mode. We will also describe how to do that below.

Possible causes of the problem

If you couldn’t force a restart and your iPhone still won’t turn on, it’s time to look for the cause.

Battery is deeply discharged

Probably the most common cause of an iPhone not turning on is a deeply discharged battery. A deep discharge is when the voltage of the battery falls below its discharge voltage. The end-of-discharge voltage is the voltage that should never be fallen below, otherwise the battery can be damaged. In addition, there is such a lack of energy in this state that the battery can no longer be easily recharged.

In the best case, it is sufficient to charge the deeply discharged battery over a longer period of time. In this state, a whole hour can pass before there is enough energy to start the phone again. In the worst case, the battery is permanently damaged and has to be replaced. Then the iPhone screen remains black.

However, the fact that charging does not help does not necessarily mean that the battery is damaged. There might be a problem elsewhere. So you shouldn’t give up here just yet.

Device problem

If no restart can be forced and the problem is not in the battery, it can be assumed that there is another fundamental software or hardware problem. Putting the iPhone into maintenance mode can help. To do this, connect it via USB cable to a PC on which iTunes is installed. Then you proceed as described in the section on forced restart. The only difference is that you don’t release the buttons when the Apple logo appears. Instead, you wait until you see the so-called maintenance state screen. The background is black. In front of it, a computer icon or an iTunes icon are displayed in white.

A dialog box will now appear on the PC where you have the option to choose between the Update and Restore options. Decide to update. Now iOS will be reinstalled. However, your data will remain. If you choose restore instead, the iPhone will be reset to factory settings and all your data will be lost.

After the update process, you can turn on your iPhone. Everything should work as usual again.

The iPhone still won’t turn on?

You tried everything but your Iphone won’t start? Then it’s time to head to an Apple store or other repair shop.

Your iPhone stops responding and none of the suggested solutions help? Then you probably can’t fix the problem yourself. In this case, you should contact Apple or another repair shop directly. There is probably a problem with the hardware.
