Amazon Fire HD 8 tablets: New edition to be thinner, lighter and faster

The manufacturer has just unveiled four new Amazon Fire HD 8 tablets. The model range includes the Fire HD 8, Fire HD 8 Plus, and two kid-friendly models called Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. They are all said to be thinner, lighter and faster than their predecessors.

Amazon Fire HD 8 tablets unveiled

Following the Fire 7 and Fire 7 Kids in May, Amazon has just unveiled its new tablets. There are a whole four models in the new Amazon Fire HD 8 series. Two of them are aimed at adults, while children and a younger target group are also provided with their own models.

Compared to the predecessor, the processor speed is said to have increased by 30 percent. The tablets use an unspecified hexa-core CPU that handles demanding tasks even faster and is better suited for games.

The new Fire HD 8 is also supposed to be noticeably better in multitasking. Thus, picture-in-picture videos with apps like Prime Video or a split-screen function can be used, for example, to send an email and do something else at the same time.

The tablets rely on an 8-inch HD display that resolves in 1,280 x 800 pixels at 189 ppi. Add to that 2 GB of RAM and a choice of 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 1 terabyte via microSD card.

Slim and robust

The manufacturer has improved the tablet’s design, which is now even slimmer and more robust. It is made of reinforced aluminum silicate glass and should be twice as resistant as the iPad mini (2021) in drop tests, according to the manufacturer.

The battery life is also improved. The Amazon Fire HD 8 is supposed to last up to 13 hours while reading, surfing, watching videos and listening to music. It takes less than 5 hours to fully charge the device via USB Type-C using the included power adapter. A maximum of 15 watts can be used for charging, which reduces the charging time to less than 2.5 hours.

In addition, the Fire HD 8 has voice control using Alexa and other accessibility features such as VoiceView screen reader, screen magnifier, subtitles, font size, high contrast text, color reversal, color correction, or convert stereo to mono.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus advantages

Above the standard version, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is positioned. It has 3 GB of RAM (instead of 2 GB) and is therefore even better suited for demanding multitasking tasks. A 9-watt power supply is also included, which charges the tablet completely in three hours.

In addition, only the Plus model can be charged wirelessly and is compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers. Also available separately is a wireless charging dock that allows you to set up and use the tablet like a smart display.

The rear-facing camera is also improved and shoots sharper pictures and videos thanks to a 5-megapixel lens, while the regular Fire HD 8 relies on a 2-MP camera.

Both variants have fast dual-band WLAN in the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards in common, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for using headphones if you do not want to use the integrated stereo speakers. Wirelessly, the tablets also communicate via Bluetooth 5.2.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro

The manufacturer also offers two new tablets for the younger target group in the form of the Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. They are designed specifically for children aged 3 to 7 and include a one-year subscription to the Amazon Kids+ service. Also included is a durable, kid-friendly case, as well as a two-year warranty.

The new Fire HD 8 Kids Pro, on the other hand, is designed for school-aged children and also comes bundled with a kid-friendly case, the 2-year worry-free warranty, and one year of Amazon Kids+. The kid-friendly media library includes entertaining and educational content from brands like Marvel, Star Wars, and Klett Schulbuchverlag.

In addition, the Pro model offers access to a digital store, where additional content and apps such as eBooks, Zoom or games like Minecraft can be found. However, these can apparently only be downloaded if parents give their consent.

Prices and availability

All four Amazon Fire HD 8 tablets are available now directly from the online store, with shipping starting October 19, 2022. The Fire HD 8 will be available in black (with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage), as well as blue (with 32GB of storage), and starts at an MSRP of 114.99 euros.

The Fire HD 8 Plus with a studded surface in gray is priced at an MSRP of 134.99 euros, and protective cases for both variants are available for 39.99 euros in black, blue, gray and pink.

The Fire HD 8 Kids can be pre-ordered for 159.99 Euros. The scope of delivery includes a child-friendly case in blue, purple or red. The integrated stand also serves as a handle. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro also starts at the same price. The kid-friendly sleeve is available in three designs: Video Games, Rainbow or Blue-Green.
