ASUS ROG Ally: All info on the new Windows gaming handheld

The cat is out of the bag: While everyone thought the ROG Ally was an April Fool’s joke, a few days later the confirmation followed that the Windows gaming handheld is real. Now the manufacturer has officially unveiled the powerful ASUS ROG Ally, which wants to take on the Steam Deck. We have summarized all the info.

All info and details about the ASUS ROG Ally

The ASUS ROG Ally is powered by AMD’s brand new APU, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, which is based on the Zen 4 architecture with RDNA 3 graphics. It offers eight cores and 16 threads as well as an impressive 8.6 TeraFLOPS of graphics performance and can thus keep up with the current gaming consoles.

A slightly weaker AMD Ryzen Z1 variant with six cores and 12 threads is to follow in the third quarter of 2023. Both support AMD’s upscaling technologies like FSR and RSR for excellent performance in AAA and indie titles.

In addition, there are 16 gigabytes of fast LPDDR5 working memory with 6,400 MHz, a 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD and a UHS II microSD card slot as storage expansion. Wi-Fi 6E is used for communication.

The innovative Zero Gravity thermal system with dual-fan system with ultra-thin heat sink fins and special heat pipes should be able to effectively cool down the high-performance handheld.

Impressive gaming performance, powerful display

In terms of performance, ASUS promises impressive performance: “For example, in initial tests at 1080p resolution, the Ally was able to achieve an average of 60-70 FPS in Hogwarts Legacy, 75-80 FPS in Call of Duty, Modern Warfare II and 85 FPS in NBA 2K23,” the manufacturer says.

In addition, it can be connected with the ROG XG Mobile eGPU and thus expanded by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. Here, 75-95 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and 60-80 FPS in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt should be possible in 4K resolution with ray tracing and DLSS 3.

The ASUS ROG Ally comes with a 7-inch display that resolves in Full HD with 1920 x 1080 pixels and offers a refresh rate of 120 hertz. FreeSync Premium allows gaming without tearing or stuttering.

The display gets up to 500 nits of brightness and should thus be easy to read outdoors. The touchscreen display also allows seamless desktop navigation, as Windows 11 is used as the operating system.
