Nokia changes logo after 60 years

Nokia has had a new logo since Sunday evening. The company wants to fundamentally change its external image and no longer be perceived as a cell phone brand. The new logo is also intended to look more contemporary than the previous one.

No longer a cell phone company

Nokia’s move comes as a surprise, as the previous logo, which has been used for nearly 60 years, is considered iconic. The company decided to change its logo because it no longer wants to be perceived as a cell phone brand. In recent years, Nokia has repositioned itself in light of developments in the market. Pekka Lundmark, Nokia’s current CEO, explains the decision as follows: “We are updating our strategy and also renewing our brand as a key point to reflect who we are today: a B2B technology innovation leader pioneering a future where networks and clouds come together.”

The company’s focus now is “industrial digitization,” as Lundberg detailed to Bloomberg. Since that is something completely different from Nokia’s former main field of activity, the move toward a new external image is only logical, he said. Moreover, the futuristic-looking new logo is said to be more in line with the spirit of the times: less edgy, less classic, very digital-looking.

Probably no new logo on Nokia smartphones

However, those who want to purchase a Nokia smartphone will most likely continue to see the old logo. Devices sold under the Nokia brand name have not been manufactured by Nokia for some time now. The trademark rights in this area were sold to HMD Global, a company founded by former Nokia executives. However, these devices advertised under the Nokia name have nothing to do with the company of the same name beyond that.

HMD Global’s retention of the old logo is also indicated by the fact that a new device, the Nokia G22, was presented one day before Nokia’s logo change, and it bears the old logo.
