Optoma CinemaX D2 Series: New ultra-short-throw laser projectors in 4K at 240 Hz

With the Optoma CinemaX D2 series, the manufacturer has introduced new ultra-short distance laser projectors that are equipped with the latest technology. They realize a 4K UHD image and offer an advanced gaming mode with up to 240 Hz and particularly low latency in 1080p.

The Optoma CinemaX D2 Series in detail

With the new Optoma CinemaX D2 series, the manufacturer has introduced high-quality new ultra-short distance laser projectors that aim to impress technically. They are based on the manufacturer’s popular P2 series and have been further improved based on feedback from customers.

The new projectors are capable of displaying an image with a diagonal of 100 inches from a distance of less than half a meter. And they do so in 4K UHD resolution with 8.3 million pixels, including HDR and HLG.

3,000 lumens of brightness is said to be achieved by the projectors and a contrast ratio of 1,800,000:1 is possible. Keystone correction is performed horizontally and vertically in 10 degrees. In doing so, the image achieves 90 percent uniformity.

The image quality can be adjusted in 32 individual points to realize a perfectly square image in combination with the advanced, integrated geometry correction. This should prove especially useful for use on uneven walls.

Also offered is an advanced gaming mode, which has a response time of just 16 ms in 4K resolution at 60 Hz. If a Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels is enough for you, even refresh rates of 240 Hz are possible with a response time of just 4 milliseconds.

High-quality lasers, rich colors

The Optoma CinemaX D2 series relies on a particularly high-quality laser to deliver the best possible picture. “In many situations, the perceived brightness of laser projectors can be twice that of a conventional lamp model. In addition, they also provide greater efficiency to ensure uniform brightness,” promises the manufacturer.

The laser is said to offer a lifetime of 30,000 hours, which is again significantly more than in the case of the competitor Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K presented in May. Thanks to the use of the Rec.709 color scheme, Optoma also promises particularly intense colors. In addition, the laser projectors are capable of displaying HDR10 and HDR content for a more detailed image.

CinemaX D2 Smart with Android TV

In addition to the regular D2, the manufacturer also offers the CinemaX D2 Smart model. It does not differ from the normal ultra-short distance laser projector from a technical point of view, but it is equipped with Android TV.

Thus, you get access to more than 400,000 movies, TV shows, live sports, music, games and apps that you can put directly on the home screen and access them quickly.

However, since the projector doesn’t have an Ethernet port and isn’t WLAN-enabled, smart connectivity is achieved with the help of an Android TV stick complete with remote control. This offers direct access to popular streaming services in the form of Netflix and Prime Video and supports voice control using Google Assistant.

Prices and Availability

The two Optoma CinemaX D2 series laser projectors are available in white and black from authorized dealers. The CinemaX P2 is also available from Amazon, for example, but the two new models are not currently listed.

The MSRP for the D2 is 1,999 euros, the D2 Smart is offered at a recommended retail price of 2,299 euros. More details can be found on the product websites of the CinemaX D2 and CinemaX D2 Smart.
