Design and finish

  • Appealing elegant design
  • IPX5 certificate

The MiiBUDS Play come in a compact charging case that closes magnetically and can be charged via a USB-C port and wirelessly via Qi charger. The box is black and has a subtle MiiBUDS logo on the top. The headphones themselves are also black and have an ergonomic design that fits the shape of the ear well. The ear tips are made of soft silicone and can be swapped out to find the perfect fit. The build quality is solid and the headphones are IPX5 certified, which means they can withstand sweat and splashing water. Thus, MiiBUDS Play are good companions for outdoor activities but also for the next workout.

Setup

  • Very easy setup
  • good range
  • missing app

The setup of the headphones is very simple and quickly done. All you have to do is take the headphones out of the case. These are automatically turned on and put into pairing mode. Subsequently, you just have to search for the MiiBUDS Play on your smartphone or other Bluetooth devices and connect them. The headphones support Bluetooth 5.2 and have a range of up to 15 meters. The connection was stable and without dropouts up to 10 meters for me. Beyond that and especially in apartments and with obstacles, first acoustic interferences could also be noticed before.

Unfortunately, there is no MIIEGO app to manage the headphones and view the battery status of the case but also the MiiBUDS Play. Here, in my view, should definitely be improved, because especially in the charging case, there is indeed LED which informs about the charge level, but nowhere is described, from which charge level the LED adjusts in color.

Operation

  • simple operation via touch
  • intuitive operation

The MiiBUDS Play has no physical buttons, but responds to touch. With a single tap, you can pause or resume music, accept or reject a call. With a double tap, you can switch to the next (right bud) or previous song (left bud). Furthermore, tapping the right bud 3 times increases the volume and tapping the left bud 3 times decreases the volume accordingly.

Siri can be activated by tapping the left bud twice. However, the left bud has to be pressed for 2 seconds for this. Unfortunately, I could not check this function due to a lack of Apple technology. The operation is intuitive and works well.

Battery life

  • Quick charging function via charging case
  • QI charging function
  • Unfortunately, less battery performance than hoped
  • No overview of current charge levels

According to the manufacturer, the MiiBUDS Play have up to 8h battery life, which can be extended up to 44 hours by charging in the case. However, the battery performance is reduced by activating the ANC/ENC functions. As a result, the headphones’ charging case should not be forgotten during longer sports activities or hikes.

What I personally liked is the quick charge function which allows the MiiBUDS Play to be provided with an intermediate charge to prolong the music enjoyment. Unfortunately, I did not get the stated battery power in my testing. Even with deactivated ANC, I did not reach the 8 hours of music at a stretch. Furthermore, the buds discharged irregularly and due to the missing app and thus insight into the battery status, I could not track in the test whether the battery of one bud may not have charged completely. Possibly, the problem was/is only with my copy. Regardless, the manufacturer offers free returns via its website.

In conclusion, I also came up with the following battery performances of the MiiBUDS Play after several runs and sometimes nightly charges (storage in the charging case). The right BUD lasted 90 minutes at half volume, and the left BUD first gave a low battery indication after about 120 minutes and shut down after a good 150 minutes. ANC was disabled within the battery tests.

Sound

  • very good sound
  • suitable for various music genres
  • good voice reproduction and recording
  • ANC could be a bit stronger

The sound of the MiiBUDS Play is the most important criterion for me when choosing headphones. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the MiiBUDS Play. They have a clear and balanced sound that reproduces both highs and lows well. The bass is powerful, but not overdone. For this reason, the MiiBUDS Play are suitable for various music genres and offer a good listening experience. The volume is sufficiently high. Phone calls and also the voice output of the MiiBUDS Play is decent.

The headphones have active noise cancellation (ANC), which effectively reduces ambient noise and ensures better concentration. In conclusion, the MiiBUDS Play also have an ambient mode (Ambient) that allows you to listen to the ambient noise without pausing the music.

Apart from the aspects of the MiiBUDS Play that can be called positive, I already wished for an app all the more during the first steps of my test. With such an app, it would be accordingly possible to adjust the intensity of the different profiles (Noisecanncelling/Ambient) or depending on the genre in an equalizer to individualize the listening experience to your own ears.

Conclusion

The MiiBUDS Play are not perfect, they have some drawbacks such as the lack of an app or the battery level that cannot be clearly tracked, but they offer good value for money and good sound. The MiiBuds Play are suitable for music lovers and athletes who appreciate a professional and elegant look.

The MiiBUDS Play are fundamentally good headphones with many features at a good price/performance ratio. An app for management is purposeful.
