Teufel Real Blue Pro Test: What can the premium headphones from Berlin do?

The name Teufel alone makes audio fans sit up and take notice, as the products of the Berlin-based company stand for outstanding quality and a convincing sound. The company also wants to deliver both in its new premium over-ear headphones, which are positioned above the somewhat outdated Real Blue NC (our review). What the new top model has up its sleeve and whether a purchase is worthwhile, clarifies our Teufel Real Blue Pro test.

Teufel Real Blue Pro review: design and workmanship

  • Stylish design
  • Convincing workmanship

In typical manufacturer fashion, the Teufel Real Blue Pro reaches us in a plain cardboard box, inside of which we are greeted by a high-quality, albeit somewhat unpleasant-smelling hard-shell transport case.

Inside, we find the headphones themselves folded compactly, along with a 3.5 mm jack cable including an in-line remote control and a USB-A to USB-C cable. The manual and warranty information round off the scope of delivery.

Visually, the Real Blue Pro – our test model is available in the silver “Titanium Grey” color scheme – is quite impressive. The eye-catcher of the headphones, regardless of whether they are in silver or black, is the bronze-colored Teufel T on the outer sides of the ear cups, which sits slightly offset on a brushed aluminum-look surface.

The largely matte headphones always add some skillful design accents. Be it through the shiny Teufel lettering on the headband or the light gray padding. Clearly, the headphones look very classy and high-quality.

Nevertheless, Teufel mainly relies on plastic, which naturally keeps the weight pleasantly low. At 303 grams, the Real Blue Pro is no lightweight, but it ranks in the good midfield of over-ear headphones.

Nevertheless, there is not the slightest thing to complain about in terms of build quality. Here, the top model does not have to hide behind the renowned competition from Sony, Bose and Co. Only the rotating mechanism of the ear cups, which can also be folded to save space, turned out a bit too smooth in our eyes.

Wearing comfort of the Teufel Real Blue Pro

  • Very good wearing comfort
  • Thick, comfortable ear cushions
  • tight fit

I like the wearing comfort of the Teufel Real Blue Pro very much. This is mainly due to the soft ear pads and the padding of the headband, both made of synthetic leather. The oval ear pads come to a thickness of around 2 centimeters, but since these do not sit directly on the slightly slanted drivers, there is an additional distance – which benefits the comfort.

The size of 4 cm x 6 cm is rather average, which means that the headphones are aimed more at small and medium-sized ears. The headband has a pleasantly grippy ratchet and thus allows a size adjustment in ten steps or 3.5 centimeters.

This puts it on par with the significantly cheaper OneOdio Focus A10 (our review) in both respects. Still, I find that the Teufel headphones rest more comfortably on the head – precisely because the padding is a bit softer. One thing to consider, however, is that the model has quite a tight fit, which is certainly not to everyone’s liking. But this additionally provides improved passive attenuation of ambient noise.

Teufel Real Blue Pro
The wearing comfort turns out very well. Only for large ears it could be tight.

Another positive aspect is that the ear pads can be replaced if necessary. However, this does not work quite as easily with plastic holders as with some competitors.

Features and battery life

  • Modern equipment
  • ShareMe and Multipoint
  • Personalized sound via listening test

In terms of features, you get a lot with the Teufel Real Blue Pro, but that’s to be expected based on the price. The headphones rely on the Bluetooth 5.1 standard, which achieves a range of about 12 meters indoors to the audio source.

However, you can also use the headphones analog via a 3.5 mm jack. The high-resolution Qualcomm aptX Adaptive codec is supported via Bluetooth, which should improve the sound.

A hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC) is also offered, which is supposed to be characterized by a particularly low background noise and can be adjusted in three strengths. The matching counterpart in the form of a transparency mode is of course also available.

There is also the option to play music on two compatible Teufel headphones at the same time using ShareMe. Bluetooth multipoint is available, as is a personalized sound that can be adjusted via listening test in conjunction with the companion app. Rounding out the features is automatic wear detection, which pauses playback when you take the headphones off.

How good is the battery life?

  • Up to 40 hours of battery life with ANC
  • About 50 hours without ANC

Very good is the battery life of the Teufel Real Blue Pro. With the ANC function active at the highest level, the over-ear model lasts for around 40 hours before it runs out of breath. If you turn off the active noise cancellation, even a good 50 hours are possible.

Operating the Teufel Real Blue Pro

  • Successful operation via buttons and touch

When it comes to the operating concept, the Teufel Real Blue Pro takes a hybrid approach of buttons and a touch control. On the left ear cup, we find the power button, which is also responsible for Bluetooth pairing. Otherwise, the two ports for USB Type-C and 3.5 mm jack are found here.

On the right is the handy joystick, which we already know from other models from the manufacturer, such as the Supreme On (our review). It serves as a button when pressed and can be moved in all directions. This is accompanied by various options.

Pressing it once starts or pauses playback, while holding it down activates the respective voice assistant. It can also be used to answer or end calls. Moving the joystick, on the other hand, adjusts the volume (up or down) or switches to the previous or next song (left or right).

Then there’s the ANC button, with which we can choose between the three levels of active noise cancellation or, by holding it down, switch to transparency mode.

Last but not least, both outer sides of the ear cups have a sensor field that allows switching to transparency mode or switching on the Dynamore technology via touch operation. All controls can also be adjusted to one’s own preferences in the companion app, and the headphones’ operation is generally very pleasing.

Sound and active noise cancellation

  • High-resolution BT codecs
  • Lush bass, clear mids
  • Slightly lacking in treble clarity; Dynamore not convincing

On paper, the Teufel Real Blue Pro sound promising. Thus, the audio professionals install 44 mm drivers that cover a frequency band from 10 Hz to 21,000 Hz. As is typical for the manufacturer, the new top model also relies on a warm sound that puts the bass somewhat in the foreground – a sound pattern that should certainly appeal to the masses.

In general, the headphones handle bass and low-frequency sounds very well and reproduce them in detail. The mids don’t lack brilliance either, which means that voices and instrumentalization are absolutely coherent. However, this only applies to a limited extent to the trebles, which again noticeably lack clarity.

Teufel Real Blue Pro Klang

Surprisingly, the ANC has an enormous impact on the sound image here and presents the treble, if deactivated, significantly clearer and more detailed. We know this from many other manufacturers, but it is clearly audible in the Teufel model. However, the dynamics are noticeably lost without active noise cancellation.

Fortunately, you can remedy this with the equalizer in the companion app, even though its waveform allows for less precise tuning than the usual 5- or 10-band equalizers of the competition. Sound-wise, the Teufel Real Blue Pro is quite pleasing, but it cannot keep up with other over-ear models in this price range.

Teufel Real Blue Pro
The equalizer in the app is a bit hard to read and doesn’t allow for completely accurate settings.

From Teufel’s speakers, the headphones inherit the Dynamore technology, which is supposed to provide a spatial sound with a wide stage and thus virtually enable a concert atmosphere. In fact, the sound gains spatiality when activated, but the pleasing warm sound image gives way to a significantly cooler mix, which we do not like in most cases.

How good are ANC and transparency mode?

  • Good ANC
  • Middle still come through

A similar picture is seen for active noise cancellation and transparency mode. Both deliver good to very good results, but do not quite present themselves on par with the comparably expensive competition.

This is especially evident in ANC, where sounds still penetrate at the highest level. Especially mid-range frequencies like voices or typing on a keyboard are better reduced by Sony, Bose or Sennheiser.

The transparency mode does a bit better in our eyes, where voices and ambient noise are amplified inside. Here, the Teufel Real Blue Pro offer a natural and clear sound.

App connectivity

The Teufel Real Blue Pro is adjusted using the Teufel Headphones app for Android and iOS, which is available for download free of charge and scores with a tidy interface and a variety of setting options.

On the one hand, ANC intensity, transparency mode and Dynamore can be switched on and off, the wear detection can be deactivated and software updates can be performed.

On the other hand, we can influence the sound via equalizer and create an individual sound image ourselves with the help of the listening test. All in all, a good app that is a useful extension.

Teufel Real Blue Pro Test: Conclusion

With the Teufel Real Blue Pro, the manufacturer from Berlin undoubtedly delivers its best headphones to date. The over-ear model scores with a chic design, high-quality workmanship, long battery life and impeccable operation.

The Pro model also has a lot going for it in terms of sound, while the active noise cancellation works very well. However, the headphones are hindered by the broad-based competition, which sometimes already achieves better results for less money.

A Sony WH1000-XM5, Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 4 or Bose QuietComfort 45 offer better noise cancellation and a somewhat more coherent sound – and are now all cheaper than the Teufel Real Blue Pro.

Nevertheless, Teufel’s performance is more than impressive. Despite the aforementioned points of criticism, the Teufel Real Blue Pro plays in the top league. If the price now drops a bit, we can recommend the purchase without hesitation.
