LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X review: the scope of delivery

  • Packaging with thin Styropror blocks
  • Comprehensive mounting accessories

LC-Power packages the Gaming 804B Obsession_X in a brown cardboard box. Besides some schematic product images and the case name, all technical specifications as well as the most important features have been printed on the cardboard box. Inside the packaging, the midi tower was wrapped in a plastic film and two blocks of hard styrofoam, which unfortunately turned out to be borderline thin for the overall weight of the midi tower. For additional protection for the side window made of tempered glass, this was also pasted with a protective film.

The included accessories are in a plastic bag, which is placed on the back of the motherboard tray. This includes five cable ties, all necessary mounting screws, a motherboard speaker, a quick start guide, and three spacers for the motherboard if it does not go across the full ATX width. Furthermore, the scope of delivery includes a control board for the fans and three dust filters for the lid, power supply and side panel. The board for the fan and RGB control has already been wired and has an adhesive strip. This is not used at the factory so the buyer can decide where to place the board.

Exterior impression

  • Mesh front panel for high airflow
  • Three pre-installed RGB front fans
  • Hinged tempered glass side window
  • USB 3.2 Type-C port in I/O panel

Due to components with high power dissipation, more and more case manufacturers are going back to airy cases with mesh instead of glass on the front panel. LC-Power is also going this route and spans the front panel of the Gaming 804B Obsession_X with a mesh grid, which is composed of small triangles. The grid is in turn surrounded by a frame made of black plastic. An additional dust filter has not been placed on the front in favor of the airflow. The front panel can be removed with a strong jerk and reveals the three pre-installed 140 mm ARGB fans. Alternatively, three 120 mm fans or corresponding radiators can be mounted here.

The case lid is also airy. This has a large fan grille, which also has room for three 120 mm or three 140 mm fans or corresponding radiators. A mesh dust filter has also been placed above the grille for dust protection and to improve the appearance. The long I/O panel is also located in the lid. It has one USB 3.2 Type-C and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, two jacks for headphones and microphone, as well as three buttons for power, reset and RGB control.

Since RGB lighting plays a major role in the Gaming 804B Obsession_X, the tempered glass side window on the left side of the case is of course a must. This has a magnetic closure and a practical pull-out aid in the form of a metal ring. Furthermore, the side window is mounted on two hinges and can be folded out or, if necessary, completely removed. The right side part of the midi tower is made of steel and has good stability. It also has captive thumbscrews, an extraction aid and another fan grill including a dust filter.

The back of the Gaming 804B Obsession_X shows an updated appearance for the typical midi tower. The power supply is mounted at the bottom and draws in filtered fresh air from below. Above it are seven horizontal and two vertical PCI slot bezels for expansion cards. Unfortunately, these are not reusable and have to be broken out. Furthermore, there are no replacement bezels in the scope of delivery. This is unfortunately a no-go for a case in this price range. Last but not least, the fourth pre-installed ARGB fan with a frame width of 120 millimeters can be seen at the back. There is also a few centimeters of space above the fan up to the lid.

At the bottom of the Gaming 804B Obsession_X you don’t see any special surprises. The filter for the power supply is made of simple mesh and can only be removed awkwardly. However, the case also offers steel tabs for a dust filter with a plastic frame that can be pulled out towards the back. Finding exactly the right filter on the Internet should prove to be a big challenge, though. The midi tower gets a secure stand via four simple but stable plastic feet, which are additionally covered with a layer of rubber.

Interior impression

  • Spacious interior for plenty of hardware
  • Accountable space for cables behind the motherboard tray
  • Good cable management system

The interior is generally divided into a large and a small chamber. This division is done via a PSU cover, the design of which we will go into more detail later. The large main chamber features a flat motherboard tray, which has nine pre-installed standoffs, six cable management openings, and a cutout for retrofitting CPU coolers with backplates. In addition, a mounting space for two 120mm fans or a 240mm radiator can be seen on the right side of the tray.

Overall, the large chamber is designed few restrictive. There are no hard drive cages or other struts behind the front fans that would interfere with the airflow or cause audible air turbulence. The back of the interior is also correspondingly airy. Besides the fan, all slot bezels and other areas have large ventilation holes.

The power supply cover is similarly full of holes. This is completely perforated above and offers mounting points for three additional 120 mm fans. Unfortunately, the necessary fan screws are not part of the mounting accessories. Similar to the mainboard tray, the cover also has various openings for routing cables, presenting the power supply and installing a front radiator. One last special feature the Gaming 804B Obsession_X offers is the modular GPU holder. The holder is made of metal and can be moved to the left or right as well as up or down. The graphics card can be clamped in place via two arms with rubber coating.

Now let’s dare to take a look under the PSU cover. The PSU rests on four thin rubber strips and the modular HDD cage has been placed in front of it. This can be removed by removing a single thumbscrew. This gives the chamber even more room for cables. Also useful are the two large plastic cable clips that LC-Power has used to pre-route the I/O panel cables. Otherwise, there are no particularly exciting features behind the motherboard tray. There is 23 to 36 millimeters of space for additional cables and numerous eyelets for tying cable ties.

A total of four data carriers can be installed in this case ex works. Three of these four can be accommodated in the modular HDD cage. This offers space for three 3.5″ or two 3.5″ and one 2.5″ HDD. If you need even more storage space, you can install another 2.5″ SSD in the corresponding mounting frame behind the motherboard tray. In all cases, a screwdriver is needed for mounting and there is no decoupling.

Overall, the build quality is okay, but not outstanding. The paint job is clean for the most part, but the material thickness is quite thin in some places and the stability of the body is borderline without side panels.

LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X review: component installation

  • Quick and clean assembly and cabling
  • Pre-installed fan with average performance
  • Good cooling

Now we come to the system installation in the LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X review. For hardware, we’re using a AMD Ryzen 5 1400 on a MSI B350 PC Mate with 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport LT gray DDR4-2666. The Ryzen is cooled by an LC-Power Cosmo Cool LC-CC-120-RGB and is overclocked to 3.8 GHz (1.25 V). A GTX 1060 6GB from Gigabyte AORUS is responsible for the image output. The power supply is handled by the fully modular LC-Power LC550 V2.31 Platinum with an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating.

We couldn’t find any problems when installing the components. The pre-installed spacers save time and there is enough space to work with. However, the GPU mount was always a bit in the way. Without removal, mounting very large graphics cards is nearly impossible. Depending on the design of the GPU cooler, compatibility issues can also arise as the bracket protrudes into the fans.
On the other hand, the cabling of the test system was not a challenge. There is enough space behind the motherboard tray and the pre-installed cable clips are especially useful for small cables. The finished system looks visually appealing and neat. The right side panel could be closed without any problems.

In terms of hardware compatibility, you hardly have to compromise in the Gaming 804B Obsession_X. For example, CPU coolers may be a maximum of 160 millimeters high and graphics cards a maximum of 420 millimeters long. This only means a certain restriction when choosing the CPU cooler. There is a maximum of 200 millimeters of space for the PSU if the HDD cage is not removed. This midi tower is also well suited for the installation of a water cooling system. LC-Power does not give any official information, but possibly even two 360 mm radiators fit into the interior at the same time. However, at least one 360 mm and one 280 mm radiator fit at the same time.

The pre-installed fans are of the type LC-CF-120- or LC-CF-140-ARGB/ 804b edition and thus seem to be a custom-made design for this midi tower. The 140 mm version consists of a black plastic frame and a milky white rotor with eleven fan blades. The 120mm version is similar, except that the rotor consists of only nine fan blades. The LEDs are located in the fan hub and are controlled via a 5V 3-pin ARGB header. Power is supplied to all fans via a standard 3-pin connector. Maximum speed is 1100 RPM for the 120 and 800 RPM for the 140 variant.

Lastly, we come to the temperatures reached in the LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X. During the stress test, Prime95 and FurMark were run for 15 minutes at a room temperature of 20 °C. In addition, the test was performed with two different fan speeds.

Scenario
Temperature
CPU: 50% PWM (950rpm)
GPU: 50% PWM (1650rpm)
Open-air benchtable (no additional fans)
CPU: 67.1 °C
GPU: 57.8 °C
CPU: 50% PWM (950 rpm)
GPU: 50% PWM (1650 rpm)
3x 140 mm 50% PWM ( 700 rpm) + 1x 120 mm 50% PWM (520 rpm)
CPU: 70.6 °C
GPU: 62.7 °C
CPU: 50% PWM (950 rpm)
GPU: 50% PWM (1650 rpm)
3x 140 mm 100% PWM (800 rpm) + 1x 120 mm 100% PWM (1100 rpm)
CPU: 67.4 °C
GPU: 59.3 °C

At full volume, the fans or the generated air noise are audible, but, from our point of view, not yet annoying. In return, however, all fans have bearing noise, which was partly perceptible even from a bit further away.
The fact that the mesh front is not very restrictive and the fans can transport enough air into the interior is shown by the temperatures, which are hardly higher than those on the table. Even stronger components could thus be accommodated and cooled in the Gaming 804B Obsession_X.

LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X: The lighting options

  • Optically responsive lighting for the RGB fans
  • Pre-installed control board with standard connectors…
  • … without central fan control

The ARGB fans are controlled via the included control board. This has five connectors each for RGB (5V 3-pin ARGB) and power (3-pin). The board is in turn connected to a button in the I/O panel and can be switched via it. Various modes and color variants are available. Optionally, the board can also be connected directly to the mainboard via a 5V 3-pin ARGB header. The control unit receives power via a normal SATA power connector. Unfortunately, the board doesn’t have an additional connector for PWM control of the fans. However, since the fans have a normal 3-pin connector, they can also be connected directly to the mainboard. Finally, a few impressions of the activated lighting.

LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X: Conclusion

Let’s move on to the conclusion of the LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X review. Basically, it is remarkable what kind of equipment has been packed into this midi tower. Four RGB fans in the standard ports including control board, plenty of space, a good cooling performance and sufficient airflow and a full USB 3.2 Type-C port in the I/O panel. Furthermore, you do not have to do without a hinged tempered glass side window and a practical GPU mount.

Unfortunately, there are also a few negative aspects. The stability of the body is particularly noticeable when the front and side panels are not attached. Then the midi tower is no longer really torsion-resistant and also quite light. In addition, the included fans are nice, but in the areas of airflow and noise they are lower mid-range at best. Finally, we also miss a dust filter in the front.

Nevertheless, the LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X definitely convinces us for the current price of 75-80€. It offers a good overall package of features, cooling, compatibility and of course RGB lighting.

88/100

The LC-Power Gaming 804B Obsession_X knows how to convince with a good configuration, a lot of space and four stylish, pre-installed RGB fans. However, the general workmanship suffers a bit under this good equipment.
