Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series Test: High quality, comfortable and innovative

Over the past few years, manufacturer Secretlab has made a name for itself among the best-known gaming chair manufacturers. Back in 2020, the company released the Titan, a gaming chair that was showered with awards and adored by e-sports professionals. The company is now re-releasing an updated version. Our Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series review reveals whether the upgrade is worth it and what the gaming chair has to offer.

For our Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series review, we took a detailed look at the XL variant of the gaming chair made of NEO Hybrid synthetic leather in the Royal color variant. As always, the new piece of furniture naturally wants to be assembled first. At least after we hoisted the huge package weighing over 30 kg to its destination.

Opening the box already reveals a very positive picture, because Secretlab first welcomes us with a huge manual that explains the assembly in detail in just 15 steps – even if only in English.

The manufacturer also recommends asking a second person for help during assembly. But even as a layman, the assembly is not a problem and is done within a few minutes. Everything you need is included in the delivery. Secretlab also neatly packs small parts, accessories and other items in their own small boxes.

The first step is to equip the base with the castors and insert the gas spring. Then the seat and backrest have to be connected with a total of four screws. After four more screws, the assembly is also almost done.

It took me less than 20 minutes to assemble it. Only slightly longer than, for example, the Backforce V (our review). However, this is probably mainly due to the size of the XL model.

I find it particularly commendable that Secretlab has thought along. When setting up a gaming chair, the mechanism for tilting the backrest likes to adjust once in a while. This can’t happen with the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series, because the composite is secured by a bright red colored screw and is fixed until you unscrew the screw after assembly.

Design, features and workmanship

In terms of design, the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series is quite classic, reminiscent of the classic bucket seat racing shape that is most common in the gaming chair segment. So, unlike the Backforce V, for example, the backrest runs straight along with quite bulky side bolsters.

Secretlab has always focused on a high degree of customizability. This also applies to the new Titan Evo 2022, which is not only available in three sizes, but also with three different upholstery options (NEO Hybrid synthetic leather, SoftWeave Plus fabric or NAPA leather) and, what’s more, in 48 different colorways.

In our case, the gaming chair is made of supple faux leather, which in the “Royal” color variant comes in a glossy, light blue look complete with white and silver details. On the inside of the backrest you’ll find the “T” symbol, which refers to the Titan series, as well as the embroidered manufacturer logo and lettering above it. You’ll also find the same in the same place on the back, along with the product series label.

The size designation (XL) is emblazoned on the left side support, along with the model year (2022). The white details and silver stitching create a simple yet elegant look, which makes the gaming chair feel at home in a more dignified office environment.

4D armrests and magnets

It is also particularly convenient that the manufacturer provides a soft neck pillow made of memory foam directly. It is also equipped with a cooling gel and thus keeps the neck in a comfortable temperature range. After a long, intensive gaming session, it is in any case much cooler than the actual seating surface.

This finds magnetic support on the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series – but only in a very limited, designated area. A comfortable height adjustment is nevertheless possible without any problems. At least, if you have chosen the right size of the chair for you.

Magnets are a good keyword, because they are used in several places on the new Evo. On the one hand, the screws that connect the backrest and seat can be hidden with a magnetic cover.

On the other hand – and here’s where it gets exciting – the Evo 2022 uses the manufacturer’s CloudSwap technology in its 4D armrests. The upholstery of the approximately 10 cm wide and 27 cm long armrests are removable.

For example, so that they can be conveniently cleaned or exchanged for other optional variants made of soft plush memory foam or cooling Technogel. Another clever and well thought-out detail that makes its debut in the 2022 series.

The 4D armrests themselves are simply outstanding, offering the ideal balance between a soft surface and secure support. However, they turn out comparatively wobbly and have too much play, especially to the left and right.

However, you can adjust them individually thanks to high-quality metal knobs. Both in height and angle. They can also be moved inwards or outwards by several centimeters and can also be tightened or widened considerably using screws on the bottom of the chair. Only folding away is not possible.

Foot base, casters and finish

The Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series is enthroned on a high-quality and extremely robust base made of reinforced ADC12 aluminum, which is also reinforced several times and leaves an excellent impression.

Beneath it sit a total of five PU casters, which have been enlarged once again compared to the previous model. This noticeably benefits the gliding properties, because the gaming chair moves very smoothly on smooth surfaces as well as on carpet.

Thanks to the soft PU surface, the floor is also protected. Even if at the expense of appearance, because the material magically attracts dust and dirt.

In general, the build quality is on a very high level and absolutely lives up to the rather high price tag. There is absolutely nothing to complain about here. The seams are neatly finished, the steel frame feels enormously robust and should also withstand permanent stress without any problems.

Seat comfort and ergonomics of the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022

The seating comfort of the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series is also impressive. In the case of the XL model we tested, the height is adjustable by a total of 9.5 cm between 46 cm and 55.5 cm. The backrest has a length of 89 cm and a width of 56 cm. This makes it four centimeters longer and 3 cm wider than the normal size.

The seat is also 2 cm larger at 49 cm and 58 cm respectively, including the raised side sections, making the gaming chair ideal for bigger butts and taller people. The recommended size of the XL version is between 181 and 205 cm, and it can support a maximum weight of 180 kg.

However, don’t worry: Even, who doesn’t quite reach the required minimum size, will find a place in the gaming chair very comfortably.

The rocker mechanism, which can be locked or released with the help of a lever on the bottom left side, is appealing. Especially since it can also be locked halfway to lock the position. It’s a bit of a shame, however, that the manufacturer does without a synchro mechanism, in which the backrest and seat change angle to each other when rocking. On the other hand, the resistance is convincing, thanks to which the rocking function is not too light and not too heavy. The resistance can of course be adjusted.

With the help of a second lever on the left side, the gaming chair can also be adjusted in height using the class 4 hydraulics, as well as tilted with the lever directly on the side of the seat. Up to 165 degrees backwards are possible, which almost puts you in a reclining position.

Combined with the wonderfully comfortable neck pillow, firm padding, and excellent lumbar support, this is pure relaxation. Especially since the front edge of the seat is minimally slanted backwards, which additionally takes pressure off the thighs. This also allows you to position your feet more comfortably underneath the seat, so if you like sitting this way, you’ll appreciate this detail.

Lordosis support and armrests

I particularly like the innovative, permanently installed lumbar support, which can be adjusted not only in height, but also in terms of its angle with the help of a rotary control on the left and right side, and thus can be nestled to the individual back shape.

Secretlab calls this feature L-ADAPT lumbar support, which we already know in a similar form from the Backforce One Plus (our review). With a nice bonus that the movable hinges inside can also adjust to the left and right of your spine.

The effects are not as pronounced in practice as it sounds. However, you can always feel it when you sit on the chair and move minimally to the left or right. All in all, next to the Backforce One Plus, this is currently the best lumbar support that can be found in a gaming chair in our eyes.

I also like the 4D armrests, except for the aforementioned wobbliness, and they are neither too hard nor too soft. However, they are quite wide and so extensively adjustable that everyone is guaranteed to find their preferred position.

In general, the seating comfort of the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series is on a very good level. The cover made of NEO Hybrid synthetic leather actually feels and looks like real leather. It is also supposed to be 12 times more durable than normal PU leather. We cannot fully confirm that yet, but it is robust and above all surprisingly dirt-repellent.

The padding is relatively hard, which takes some getting used to. However, I personally find it very comfortable. However, the fabric version should probably be somewhat softer.

Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series Test: Conclusion

With the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series, the manufacturer has undoubtedly created its best gaming chair to date, which more than lives up to its rather high price. I don’t have much to criticize, apart from the somewhat wobbly armrests and the missing synchro mechanism.

Instead, the gaming chair impresses with a simply outstanding seating comfort, high-quality workmanship and some really clever details. The lumbar support is one of the best that can currently be found in the premium segment. I also like the pleasant rocker function and the 165-degree tilt.

The hot-swappable 4D armrests and the magnetic, cooled neck cushion are simply a brilliant idea, while the high-quality cover should easily last for many years. And no one is fooling Secretlab when it comes to customizability, either. After all, no other manufacturer offers more padding, designs and options.

So if you’re willing to pay the rather high price, you’ll be excellently served with the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 Series. The only thing you should keep in mind is that your back will thank you more for a gaming chair with a synchro mechanism, as it will have to work actively and the muscles will be better preserved.
