Open PS5 browser – how to do it?

Sony brings numerous innovations to the market with every PlayStation. Each console differs from its predecessor not only in details, but also in the overall concept. This also applies to the PS5, which was hardly available in retail stores for a long time. Particularly noticeable – besides the thoroughly renewed design – is the fact that there is no browser to be found anymore. Is free internet surfing still possible with the PS5? We’ll tell you whether you can open a PS5 browser – and how exactly that works.

PS5 without an Internet browser

First of all, the PS5 does not have a dedicated Internet browser, unlike its predecessors. Browsing the Internet with Sony’s latest console is therefore much more difficult than with the PS4, for example. The previous models had an integrated browser that could be called up in the menu. Then – equivalent to the web browser on a PC – surfing the Internet was possible without restrictions. With this function, the PS3 or 4 temporarily became a veritable computer replacement in some households. With the PS5, all that is no longer possible, since – as already mentioned – the browser function is missing.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t access the Internet with your PS5 anymore. Especially in light of the fact that the vast majority of games today require a persistent Internet connection, it would have been slightly out of time to launch a console without Internet functionality. Does this perhaps mean that a loophole for browsing can be found after all?

PS5 browser open via detours

It is indeed possible to open a browser on the PS5 via detours. But one thing in advance: Not only opening the browser is less convenient than on the predecessor models, but also the further use. So you shouldn’t expect surfing pleasure.

Send message with URL

Probably the easiest way to get on the Internet with the PS5 is to send a friend a message via the console that contains a URL. Sony has created a kind of chat system with which messages can be sent. If you send a URL here, it becomes a link that you can click – and you’re already on the Internet. Ideally, you send a link to a search engine, then you can surf the Internet relatively freely.

Alternative possibilities

Besides this relatively simple one, there are some more complicated ways to open the PS5 browser. What all these ways have in common is that they work with pre-installed Internet applications of the PS5. To get to them, you need to follow these steps:

1. Click on the gear icon at the top right of the PS5’s home screen.
2. Select the “Users and Accounts” item in the settings.
3. Then select the item “Connect to other services”.

Here you will now be offered Apple Music, Spotify, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube. Select one of the services and click on “Link account”. You don’t have to enter anything here and you don’t have to log in. Instead, click on “Privacy”. You will then be shown Google’s privacy policy – including the linked Google logo in the upper left corner. Click on the logo to go to the Google search engine and use the Internet.
