Lenovo has presented the Legion Y31p-30, a particularly large 4K gaming monitor that is supposed to convince with a high resolution and very short moving picture response time. It is expected to hit the market next year.
10-bit color depth and 4K resolution
With a screen diagonal of 31.5 inches, the screen with its IPS panel achieves a resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels and thus a pixel density of 139 ppi. In addition, there is a color depth of 10 bits, although this is only achieved simulated. The actual color depth is eight bits; FRC is added. The sRGb color space is covered by 99 percent, the P3 color space by 90 percent. The contrast is 1,000:1, the brightness up to 400 cd/m², which is not unusual for IPS panels. Very unusual is the response time of two to five milliseconds announced by Lenovo and even more so the promised Moving Picture Response Time of only 0.2 milliseconds. Lenovo has not yet revealed how this is to be achieved. Backlight strobing would be possible.
The screen supports Freesync Premium and is HDR certified. However, it only fulfills the requirements of the lowest certification level DisplayHDR 400; the local dimming only covers 16 zones. The picture modes Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture for simultaneous display of two picture sources are supported.
Lenovo’s promised automatic adjustment of the screen’s brightness to the ambient light sounds much more exciting. The monitor is equipped with a brightness sensor for this. Day-night differences and similar fluctuations in the environment’s illumination can thus be compensated automatically.
Large connection options
The numerous connection options offered by the device should also be emphasized. It is equipped with a DisplayPort 1.4 port, two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB-C upstream port with DP 1.4 and a maximum of 75 watts, as well as a USB-C downstream port with 15 watts of power and one such USB-A downstream port. A headphone jack and two five-watt speakers are added.
Rounding out the Lenovo monitor’s features is an RGB bar at the bottom of the screen, a fold-out bracket for hanging headsets, and a KVM switch feature that allows two systems to be operated with one mouse and keyboard on the screen.
Price and Availability
The device is scheduled to hit the market early next year. The called price is 999 euros. Lenovo’s new European factory is unlikely to manufacture the monitor in the process, as it focuses on building server infrastructure, storage systems and high-end PC workstations.
