Lenovo Smart Paper: 10.3-inch e-ink touchscreen as a digital notebook

With the Lenovo Smart Paper, the manufacturer has introduced a digital notebook with an e-ink touchscreen display that aims to compete with the Amazon Kindle Scribe and the reMarkable 2.

Lenovo Smart Paper in detail

The Lenovo Smart Paper is a 10.3-inch digital notebook that is operated via a touchscreen with an e-ink display. It is supposed to be particularly suitable for notes that can be put on (virtual) paper with the included stylus called Paper Pen.

The stylus works without a battery and has a felt tip, which allows it to write or draw on the display with a low latency of only 23 milliseconds. It offers tilt detection, 4,096 levels of pressure and various setting modes such as pencil, ballpoint, marker and more.

For notes, drawings, and more, the Lenovo Smart Paper comes with over 70 templates, such as a drawing paper, blank sheet, or lined sheet. They can be stored in the 64 GB internal memory, which should be enough for over 50,000 pages in the notebook according to the manufacturer.

In addition, content is automatically synced to the cloud and can be played back on other devices via the Lenovo Smart Paper app.

Writing like on paper

The 10.3-inch e-ink display of the Lenovo Smart Paper resolves in 1,872 x 1,404 pixels and thus achieves a pixel density of 227 ppi. It only allows a black-and-white display, which means the tablet is not suitable for rendering media content.

On the other hand, the display is supposed to imitate the feeling of writing on real paper and can convince here. Two microphones are also installed, which realize a dictation function. There is also access to around two million e-books on eBooks.com, which can be displayed and read with the tablet.

Calendar and e-mail apps are also offered to integrate Lenovo’s Smart Paper into the office routine. Headphones can also be connected via Bluetooth 5.2 or USB-C, while the battery has a capacity of 3550 mAh.

The tablet is powered by a Rockchip RK3566 quad-core CPU (4x 1.8 GHz) and 4 GB of working memory. Android 11 serves as the operating system.

Price and Availability

The Lenovo Smart Paper should be available as soon as possible. Some sources speak of January 2023, but the manufacturer itself gives spring 2023 as the launch date. The recommended retail price is 479 Euros (~$417), which includes the tablet, a stylus, and a folio cover.
