NIO EC7: Aerodynamic electric SUV coupé unveiled

In addition to the flagship ES8 e-SUV, the manufacturer from China also unveiled the NIO EC7 at NIO Days 2022, a streamlined electric SUV coupe that focuses on chic design and high interior comfort.

NIO EC7 in detail

Car manufacturer NIO, which is now also gaining a foothold in Germany, has unveiled – initially exclusively for its Chinese home market – the NIO EC7, an exciting e-SUV coupe. The EC7 is also equipped with the battery swap system, where the battery can be quickly and automatically replaced at battery swap stations – also already launched in Germany.

The EC7 has a length of 4.96 meters, is 1.97 meters wide and only 1.71 meters high. The model is equipped with intelligent air suspension as standard, which promises a high level of ride comfort. The drag coefficient is said to be just 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic electric car in the world, according to the manufacturer.

On the outside, the e-SUV coupe is sporty with curved edges, as well as a controllable rear spoiler and perched on large tires. A large panoramic roof is also part of the standard equipment. The top of the front features a camera and LiDAR sensors, while the panoramic roof is made of double-layered acoustic and thermal insulation glass.

Bright and intelligent Smart Matrix LED lights, together with the LiDAR sensor, are said to be able to automatically measure and intelligently respond to road conditions. This means the EC7 is already ready for autonomous driving (NIO Autonomous Driving).

Luxury in the interior

The interior of the NIO EC7 is also luxurious, especially since the panoramic roof can be adjusted in five light transmission levels to let in natural light. The front seats fold back into a relaxed lounge position at the touch of a button and feature a footrest.

The front seats also come standard with a massage function, heated seats, cooling and are especially comfortable thanks to air cushions. In the font, seat heating and cooling are also integrated, massage function and Air Cushion are optional.

There’s also a panoramic cockpit called PanoCinema up front, as well as a 7.1.4 sound system including Dolby Atmos, ambient lighting and a 12.8-inch AMOLED display in the center console. Many smart sensors and safety systems skillfully round out the features.

NIO EC7 with new electric platform

The NIO EC7 relies on a newly developed electric platform (NT 2.0) from the manufacturer and is offered with either a 75 kWh or 100 kWh battery pack. According to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), a maximum range of 940 km should be possible, but the manufacturer does not yet provide a range specification according to WLTP.

It is powered by two electric motors with a total output of 480 kW, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Thanks to the Brembo braking system, the e-car also gets into its stride and comes to a halt from 100 km/h in just 33.9 meters.

Also on offer are a total of ten intelligent driving modes, for example with a trailer docked, a comfort and eco mode and various modes for snow, sand, rain and much more.

Prices and availability

The NIO EC7 electric SUV coupe will initially launch exclusively in China, where pre-orders are available now before deliveries are scheduled for May 2023. The price starts at around 65,000 euros. Whether and when the EC7 will also come to Europe is currently still open. More details can be found on the official website of NIO.
