Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro – smart fan in test

Besides smartphones, the Chinese technology giant Xiaomi is probably known to most people for various smart home devices. These include air conditioners, such as air purifiers and humidifiers, but also smart fans. The current generation of smart fans consists of three models, ranging from the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite and the Fan 2 to the Fan 2 Pro, which is the top model available to us. Among other things, this one offers a modern design, a power-saving DC motor, a rechargeable battery, as well as app and voice control. Whether the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro can convince and what added value the smart fan offers compared to a simple model can be found out in our review.

Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro: scope of delivery and assembly

  • Can be used as a table fan or a standing fan
  • (Almost) tool-free assembly in just a few minutes

The box of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro is relatively compact for a standing fan. This is due to the fact that it is height-adjustable and instead of a long rod, there is a shorter one, including the motor, and an extension in the box. Furthermore, we find the fan base, the fan assembly and a bag with other parts necessary for assembly. Charging or power supply is done via a charging station with a 1.60 m cable.

Installation, operation including the WLAN connection and maintenance are described extensively, well understandable and illustrated in the enclosed manual. First, the fan assembly is opened and attached to the motor step by step. After attaching the front fan grille, it is screwed to the rear fan grille. Finally, the assembly is inserted either, for table fan mode, directly into the base or, for stand fan mode, first into the extension and then into the fan base. Assembly is straightforward, takes place without tools except for a single screw, and takes only a few minutes. The required Allen wrench is included.

Design and workmanship

  • Modern and sleek design
  • Controls and LEDs on the top
  • Material quality and workmanship can convince

The design of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro is almost identical to the other fans of the manufacturer. Xiaomi relies on a modern and simple design. All components are white, and on the front fan grille there is a white Mijia logo in the center as well, which refers to the affiliation with the Xiaomi Smart Life series. On the top of the motor are the controls as well as white and blue LEDs, which signal the current mode and settings, respectively. Another LED is located on the front of the fan base and roughly indicates the battery status.

The material is mainly plastic, only the two-part rod is made of white painted metal. The material quality is very good throughout, the fan looks high-quality. The same applies to the workmanship. We did not notice any unclean edges or minor flaws, neither when the fan was fully assembled nor when it was set up.

Overall, the modern but simple look and the quality convinced us in the test. The Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro fits visually in every corner and every room and blends well into the overall picture.

Operating the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro

  • Operation on the device, by app or by voice control
  • One app for all devices – the fan uses the popular Mi Home app
  • Voice control supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant

The operation of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro is possible directly on the device, or via app or voice control. On the top of the engine can be found four buttons arranged in a row, the following functions:

  • Switch on / off
  • Change speed/mode – switch between slow (level 1), medium (level 35), fast (level 70) and turbo (level 100/100), hold down to switch between “direct breeze” and “natural breeze” modes
  • Enable/disable oscillation – the default angle is 90°C and can be adjusted in the app, after power on the last set angle is used
  • Timed power off – automatic power off after 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours

Four LEDs arranged in series indicate the currently selected speed level. Two more LEDs indicate which fan mode is active and whether the fan is connected to the WLAN. The operation is easy to understand and intuitive.

App and voice control

Besides the operation on the device, it is possible to control the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro using the Xiaomi Home app. To set it up, you need to press and hold the power on/off and change speed/mode buttons until the fan beeps. After that, you can add the device in the app and now make the already known and also other settings in the app.

The fan speed is very precisely adjustable within the app, with 100 steps. The oscillation can be adjusted in five steps from a 30° to a 140° angle, or it can also be deactivated. Besides the basic functions, LEDs and notification sound can be (de-)activated or routines can be created. The latter allow, for example, switching the Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro on or off at a set time, or changing the speed and other settings.

If you use Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant, you can also control the device via voice command. We used the Google Assistant in our test. For this, the Mi Home account has to be linked to within the Google Home app, after which the device can be assigned to a home and room.

Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro in the field test

During the last few weeks, the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro was, thanks to summer temperatures, almost constantly in use with us, so we had plenty of time to test the various modes, speeds and features in detail.

Quiet but still powerful DC motor

  • Quiet and efficient DC motor
  • Two-piece fan design for stronger airflow
  • Two modes of airflow: direct and natural breeze

If we leave aside the smart features then the differences from many other stand fans are the two-piece fan design, DC mode and battery operation. The two-piece fan design is said to result in stronger airflow, and with it, more powerful cooling and longer range. A similar model for direct comparison is missing, but the airflow can definitely be called strong. We rarely use the highest speed; we found a significantly lower speed to be perfectly sufficient and pleasant. This is of course also due to the battery operation, which makes it possible to keep the distance between and and the fan manageable.

The advantages of the DC motor are a high efficiency, a very even speed and a low noise level. The latter ranges from 28.1 to 58 dB(A), which corresponds to a quiet bedroom at night or normal speech at 1 m distance. In “direct breeze” mode, we found the volume to be very pleasantly quiet and unobtrusive up to level 25. With increasing speed, the fan gets louder, is at level 50, but still pleasant and then clearly audible at level 100. We find the ratio of airflow and volume to be good. In the “gentle breeze” mode, the volume behaves similarly, but is often a bit quieter. This is because the speed in this mode changes within an interval to simulate a natural wind. We found this mode to be very pleasant and therefore used it most of the time.

Practical app, voice control with weaknesses

  • Already on the device, there are sufficient setting options
  • the app allows very precise settings and routines/automations
  • the voice control supports only a few functions

Even without an app, the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro knows how to please in the test. Due to the four buttons as well as the LEDs on the device, this is also not necessarily or only rarely necessary. In addition to the finer setting options, the advantages of the app are mainly in the automation. If you have regular routines in everyday life, you can create certain sequences. For example, it is possible to wake up to a light breeze in the morning, or to create a comprehensive program throughout the day, where the LEDs are turned off in the bedroom in the evening and the speed is gradually reduced until the fan is turned off completely after the expected time of falling asleep.

While the app was convincing, the voice control disappointed us. The setup and also the control worked smoothly in the test, but the voice control options are very limited. The Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro can be turned on and off via voice, and a timer can be set. However, if we want to change the speed, for example, we are informed that this function is not yet available. Considering the possibilities of the app, this is simply too little. Whether and when this and other functions will be added is unknown to us.

Battery life and charging time of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro

  • At slower speeds, the battery life is sufficient
  • … but drops significantly at sustained strong airflow
  • High self-discharge due to the constant WLAN connection

The battery life of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro is highly dependent on the set speed. We measured this for three different speeds. These are the 10/100 level, which is a light breeze, the 50/100 level, which is clearly noticeable, as well as the 100/100 level to determine the minimum runtime.

Mode stage Battery life in hours
Direct breeze 10/100 19:00
50/100 11:30
100/100 4:15
Natural breeze 10/100 17:00
50/100 16:00
100/100 11:30

We find the battery life to be sufficient, especially in the “natural breeze” mode. In the “direct breeze” mode it is mostly below that, especially at high speeds the differences are clear. Potential buyers who want a very strong airflow should take this into account. Unfortunately, the battery discharges relatively quickly due to the constant WLAN connection even when not in use. Thus, it can happen that you have charged the fan and not used it for several days, but the battery level is already low again after the first switch-on. The complete charging process took about 2.5 hours.

We see the battery as a very practical addition to mains operation, but by no means as a replacement. Most users will probably use the fan mainly in one place, e.g. continuously for several hours in the study, and will probably also have a power outlet there. Thanks to the battery, the Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro can also be taken to other rooms afterwards and the charging station can remain on site. This offers significantly more flexibility than pure mains operation.

Summary of the Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro Test

The Xiaomi Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro convinces in the test with a very good workmanship, a modern design, many features and control options. If we consider the main function of a fan, then it does a very good job. The Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro provides a strong airflow, this also happens very quietly, especially in the lower stages. Xiaomi also offers two different modes, of which we are particularly impressed by the natural breeze that reminds us of real wind. The battery proved to be very practical in the test, and the battery runtime was sufficient in our favorite settings. Only the quick self-discharge is annoying.

The smart functions are, as expected for a fan, manageable and will probably mainly appeal to users who already own various other smart devices. The app offers all the expected settings, which can be adjusted very finely. The automation offers many options, which are practical for constantly high temperatures and very even daily routines. The voice control currently still offers very few options; we would have expected more here.

The price of the Smart Standing Fan 2 Pro can also be criticized. It is currently still too high and should be at the level of the first Pro model or only slightly higher for a good price-performance ratio. Nevertheless, the Fan 2 Pro remains the first choice for Smart Home fans. Those who want similar features but want to spend less can also take a look at the other Xiaomi fans. For example, the models starting with the Smart Standing Fan 2 also offer the quiet DC motor and smart features, and the 2S also has a battery.
