ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L test: Every rodent goes full throttle here

Most mouse pads that we are familiar with have a plastic or fabric surface. These materials are available in all colors, shapes and sizes. However, ASUS now claims to have launched a model with particularly good gliding properties, as the preferred gaming mouse literally flies over the material thanks to a surface made of hardened glass. Another advantage is that the mouse pad is quick and easy to wipe clean. Our ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L test clarifies whether the whole thing is worthwhile and where the advantages and disadvantages lie.

ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L review: Design and build quality

  • simple and high-quality design
  • generous surface area
  • smooth silicone underside

The addition of the name L to the ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L already indicates an impressive size, although the L version, which was presented at gamescom 2023, is currently the only size option in the manufacturer’s portfolio – so it is conceivable that we can expect even smaller or even larger glass mouse pads in the future.

But be that as it may, with a size of 500 mm x 400 mm and a low height of 4 millimetres, the ASUS mouse pad offers plenty of room for your rodent’s movements. However, with a weight of almost 1.9 kilograms, the ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L, which is available in either white or black, is certainly no lightweight. Which, of course, also speaks for the build quality.

The mouse pad is made up of two parts: The manufacturer uses tempered glass for the surface, while the underside is made of non-slip silicone and rests securely on the desk and other surfaces without slipping even in the most heated game.

The surface has a speckled design, which gives the mouse pad a sophisticated look. What appears to be a non-slip texture is, however, positioned under the hardened glass so as not to impair the gliding properties of the mouse pad.

The ASUS ROG slogan “For those who dare” can be found on the left edge , while the brand logo is printed in the top right corner. With their white coloring, the details provide a pleasant contrast to the black surface.

As the print is located underneath the glass, the details also appear slightly blurred – depending on the angle – which creates a unique look. The non-slip silicone underside also looks great with the manufacturer’s lettering in the bottom right-hand corner, as well as characters and coordinates in the top left-hand corner – it’s just a shame that you can’t see any of this once the mouse pad has been positioned.

Impeccable workmanship

  • excellent workmanship
  • scratch-resistant and shatterproof

Surely you have to handle a glass mouse pad with kid gloves? Not necessarily. The ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L is made of 9H tempered glass. This value refers to the hardness of pencils, with 9H marking the highest hardness on the scale.

According to the manufacturer, the glass mouse pad is absolutely shatterproof and can even withstand drops from a height of one meter without any problems. However, I didn’t really want to try this out during the test.

In addition, the Moonstone Ace L is supposed to be particularly scratch-resistant and thus survive years of use without any signs of wear and tear. Of course, I can’t confirm this either in my short time with the mouse pad, but even after intensive gaming sessions lasting several hours, there were no problems. Even if you press down harder on the mouse.

In any case, the build quality of the ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L is impeccable and absolutely lives up to the high price. Another practical feature is that the glass surface is particularly easy to clean: water and liquids simply roll off. All you have to do afterwards is wipe it with a cloth and everything is as good as new.

Practical test

  • uniquely fast gliding properties
  • requires familiarization
  • fast, precise movements possible

A mouse pad made of glass is of course something new. However, this idea has apparently been on the minds of manufacturers for some time, as Razer presented a very similar solution with the Atlas in March 2023.

The enormously smooth surface is of course initially associated with a change, because no mouse pad that has ever rested under a rodent in my hands has offered such a fluffy gliding sensation.

Above all, gaming mice with PTFE gliding feet, which are now fitted to the vast majority of devices anyway, benefit most from the glass surface. In practice, the mouse I used glided so quickly over the Moonstone Ace L that I was able to significantly reduce the resolution in DPI compared to my normal mouse pad.

A light tap on the side of the rodent is enough for the mouse to move across almost the entire surface. Of course, this also takes some getting used to at first. But once you get the hang of it, the advantages become obvious.

Fast-paced competitive shooters or similar games in particular benefit noticeably from the mouse pad. The movement required to aim or dodge quickly is significantly reduced. As I prefer to play with low DPI settings anyway, I benefit from the surface.

Whether you like it or not is certainly a matter of taste. Personally, I quickly appreciated using the ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L in the test, especially in games.

ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L review: Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L leaves an impeccable impression in the test. The design is both simple and elegant, and the workmanship is extremely high-quality and robust. The sheer size, which provides more than enough space for excessive movements, is also very pleasing.

Thanks to the high weight and the non-slip silicone underside, it also ensures that everything stays in place, even when things get heated.

The gliding properties of the tempered glass surface are unique and naturally benefit players who use lower DPI settings in particular. The resulting ultra-fast glide is unparalleled, but requires a certain amount of familiarization and adjustment.

However, once you have got used to it, you quickly learn to appreciate the advantages of the interface. Of course, all of this comes at a price and over 100 euros for a mouse pad is quite a lot – although ASUS is absolutely on a par with the competition here and doesn’t charge any more.

The ASUS ROG Moonstone Ace L therefore delivers an all-round coherent overall package that should appeal to fans of competitive shooters in particular.
